| ****** Brilliant. Amazing. Even more instant for me than Riptide and the video is excellent. Senast ändrad: 20.07.2014 16:39 |
| **** Good track. |
| ***** Sounds very much like Boy & Bear. Great track from Vance Joy, though it is hard to judge against 'Riptide'. |
| **** Solid track. Will likely be a grower. |
| **** One day I should update my 'Riptide' review because I still have a lot to say without knowing how to put it into words :P

The guitar tones are lovely but it's a little bland. 3.5 |
| **** aufgerundete 3.5 für diesen australischen Folk-/Indie-Pop...
|
| **** Nice, but "Riptide" was more appealing to me on first listen than this. |
| *** I'd say I'm disappointed, but that implies I expected anything better.

So, at the start of the year, Vance Joy got the big honour of topping the Hottest 100 poll with "Riptide". This was probably a good result for the station and the countdown, as (unless you actually studied the votes coming through on social media leading up to it) "Riptide" was something of an underdog. I'd constantly seen people back halfway through the year utterly convinced with full confidence that "Get Lucky" would do it, before transferring that over to "Royals" and never letting go. Once the result became clear, these people might have admitted their folly, or they might have shrugged it off and pretended that they knew all along, but either way, deep down in their mind, they'll know that they were wrong to be so assumptious. So they're more likely to keep an interest than if the whole thing just became so predictable. There's the added bonus that Vance Joy is Australian, and owes his popularity to the station (and a metric f**kload of ads, but that's another story).

But from a personal perspective, that win is so irritating. Not only because "Riptide" is really just not that good, but because it would propell Vance Joy to an advantageous career position. History shows that anyone who tops the polls, usually has pretty respectful success (out the gate at least) with their follow up material. I just don't think he's deserving of that push which has helped this be a top 40 hit, and his album will probably debut at #1 too, because he's just so uninteresting. Even a comedian who just stole jokes & schtick from Bill Hicks is more interesting than Vance Joy. Perhaps this doesn't really matter since if the alternative option of Lorde hardly seems like someone who needs a career boost, but I'd prefer the option where things like this are less visible.

A positive note, it's not a "Riptide" copy, nor does it seem like it tries to be one. But it's not interesting enough otherwise. The build up is not utilised properly, the chorus melody is weak and the whole thing just isn't worth the bother. It's not like I have a problem with indie folk, one of my favourite albums this year is "Benji", but you just need to inject something of interest into the template. I feel sorry for Kim Churchill who essentially wrote a more captivating version of a Vance Joy song who isn't seeing half the success because his song isn't on a Medibank ad. Oh well. |
| *** Decent. |
| **** ...beschwingter IndiePop des Australiers - gemütlicher als Riptide - mit netter Melodie, 'uhuuuuGesang' und Geigengezupfe... |
| **** A nice listen. I like the music style which has some similarities to The Temper Trap. Good organic sound. Not a mess. |
| **** Great track but Riptide > Mess is Mine every day of the week. Having said that this peaked far too low. Senast ändrad: 09.02.2017 03:43 |
| **** eigentlich ganz angenehm und beinahe episch...dieses geklatsche müsste jedoch nicht sein |
| **** I like the bit after the chorus (the instrumental part) it's like a whole heap of energy that is built up during the rest of the song - unfortunately those bits of the song last too long, making this more on the boring side to me. Nice though. |
| ****** Tho riptide is the song he is known for. This song is of far better quality in my opinion. |
| **** Geht gerade noch so. |
